What are allergies?

Allergies occur when your immune system responds, like it would to a germ, to something that is harmless like pollen, weeds, pet dander, or certain foods. Your body releases hormones when it comes in contact with whatever you are allergic to (referred to as an allergen) and causes symptoms.

What are the symptoms of allergies?

In the case of common springtime allergens, like pollen, grass, and ragweed, allergy sufferers experience itchy eyes, itchy and runny nose, sneezing, tiredness, and in some cases itchy skin reactions.

Food allergies and allergic reactions to other substances like bee stings, or poison ivy, cause different symptoms and in some cases can be life threatening. When a serious allergic reaction occur, call 911 immediately. People with known serious allergies may have an epi pen (a specific shot to stop serious reactions) which should be injected right away if they come into contact with the allergen.

What can you do to reduce the symptoms?

If you think you have allergies, you may want to talk to your doctor or find an allergy specialist to determine what you are allergic to so you can know what to avoid and treat. A doctor may prescribe you with medicine or immunotherapy (a long-term prevention treatment, like an allergy shot). Mild seasonal allergy symptoms can be treated with anti-histamines, over-the-counter allergy medications, eyedrops, and nasal spray.

You can track the allergens in your area using online maps and forecasts. Watch your symptoms and notice when they occur. If it interferes with your daily life, see a doctor. You don’t need to suffer through the seasons.
