Councilmember LaRuby May Statement on UMC Board Move to Find New Site for Hospital

May continues to fight for new, quality hospital East of the River.

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Councilmember LaRuby May applauded the actions of the Board of Directors of the United Medical Center (UMC), which unanimously voted to approve a study of potential locations for a new hospital east of the Anacostia River, a community severely underserved by the lack of high quality healthcare facilities.

Next week, the Board will reconvene to review proposals from firms with previous experience in site selection. A final decision about the site selection firm is likely in the coming weeks, in order for the selection process to begin in August 2016.

Councilmember LaRuby May, "I am committed to promoting the prosperity and growth of Ward 8 and its residents, this decision by the UMC Board is a critical step in delivering access to quality healthcare options to Ward 8 residents as well as good paying healthcare jobs."

A new quality hospital center would serve to bolster expansion of healthcare services East of the River, realizing components of Councilmember May's Social Equity Empowers Dream Health Act of 2016, which among other provisions, requires the Executive to release a detailed plan in regards to improving access to healthcare to the levels seen West of the River.
